Manitoba Metis Federation response to CBC Documentary on Bell of Batoche

April 11, 2014

WINNIPEG - New information has been brought forth in a CBC documentary uncovering historical proof that the purported Bell of Batoche is actually the Bell of Frog Lake, a community 400 kilometres away from Batoche.  MMF President David Chartrand reconfirmed his position regarding the controversy around the historical Metis artifact.

"We have always maintained that the bell from Millbrook be returned to its rightful resting place and should have not been exploited in any way. In this case, we now know, the bell in question should be returned to Frog Lake, Alberta."

He went on to say, "More importantly, we can now be left with a true sense of pride that the Bell of Batoche has never left its resting place and has resurrected itself to its position in Canadian history.  The significance of this finding reinforces the story and struggle of the Bell of Batoche just as it echoes that of our Metis Nation."

"I commend CBC documentaries on an exceptional job in their pursuit of historical truth."
