Protecting our Métis Harvesters and their Right to Support their Families

September 25, 2015

“We are prepared to extend our Hand for a Handshake of Friendship or Circle the Red River Carts”

Winnipeg, MB – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is a strong believer in partnerships and equality in those relationships. We have worked diligently and in good faith with the province of Manitoba on matters of responsible harvesting, conservation and the further provincial recognition of our territory. During our upcoming Annual General Assembly taking place September 26 and 27 at the Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg we are expecting an announcement on the expansion of the boundaries of the Métis harvesting zone.

This announcement will either be a joint endeavor between the Manitoba Metis Federation and the province of Manitoba that recognizes and respects our Métis Harvesters right to harvest and support their families, or it will be an announcement that the Manitoba Metis Federation will go it alone and back our Metis Law abiding Harvesters.

“We are always open to continuing partnerships,” states MMF President David Chartrand, “but no one will insult our harvesters. Our harvesters will not be treated as criminals – they have a right to harvest in our traditional territories and support their families. For every Harvester with a valid Metis Harvester card and who are following the Metis Laws of the Hunt, the MMF is prepared to support and defend them, if need be, should they be charged.”

The MMF encourages our Métis Harvesters to continue hunting and fishing on traditional territory both within and outside the current Métis harvesting zone.

“Nothing that we have has been given to us. We have struggled for everything we have,” says President Chartrand, “we are prepared to extend our hand for a handshake of friendship or circle the Red River Carts.”
