Metis Laws of the Hunt Influential in Conservation and Recognition of Rights

September 27, 2015

Winnipeg, MB – During this year’s 47th Annual General Assembly, President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Premier Greg Selinger of the province of Manitoba that puts into place concrete steps that will lead to a further recognition of the traditional territories of the Metis Nation’s Manitoba Metis Community.

“Conservation is very important to the Metis,” stated President Chartrand, “and our Metis Laws of the Hunt testify to our commitment to strong and effective conservation efforts. This MOU with Manitoba not only acknowledges our conservation commitments, but also provides a process towards recognition of traditional Metis harvesting territories including the Manigotagan and Grass River areas.”
