Manitoba Métis Have Bittersweet Reaction to Prime Minister Trudeau’s Cabinet

Encouraged by the Prime Minister’s recognition of three Indigenous Peoples of Canada but notes there is no Métis Minister in Cabinet.

Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his Cabinet this morning at Rideau Hall. During the swearing-in ceremony all three of Canada’s Indigenous people were represented by cultural performances.

“It was incredibly delightful to see the three young Métis Jiggers escort Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Cabinet from Rideau Hall to the fiddling of the Red River Jig,” stated Manitoba Metis Federation President David Chartrand, “The Jig recalls the Red River Settlement, now Winnipeg – The Birthplace of the Métis Nation and the Heart of the Métis Homeland.”

“It is good to see the Prime Minister recognize Canada’s Indigenous Peoples in the swearing-in ceremony,” mentioned President Chartrand, “I note two of Canada’s three Indigenous Peoples do have representation in Cabinet. I look forward to the day when we also have a Métis Minister in Cabinet to represent the largest group of Canada’s Indigenous People.”

For the important portfolio of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Prime Minister Trudeau appointed the Honorable Carolyn Bennett. Minister Bennett was the former Liberal critic for this portfolio.

“Minister Bennett brings considerable expertise to this portfolio,” said President Chartrand, “I had opportunity to meet with the Minister when she was Liberal critic for this portfolio. The Manitoba Métis have developed a good working relationship with her. We look forward to working with her and Prime Minister Trudeau in fulfilling their commitments to the Métis Nation.”
