Welcoming the Grey Cup to the Heart of the Metis Nation Homeland

November 25, 2015

Winnipeg, MB – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is honoured and excited to take part in the 2015 Arrival of the Grey Cup Procession and welcomes the Grey Cup to the Birthplace of the Métis Nation and the Heart of the Métis Homeland.

The MMF is the self-government representative of the Métis Nations’ Manitoba Métis Community. It is through the MMF by which the Métis organize politically, manage their own affairs, and continue to be a dynamic force in the growth and success of Manitoba and Canada.

The Métis are Manitoba’s largest indigenous people. As the Manitoba Métis Community is Canada’s Negotiating Partner in the Confederation, and the Founder of the Province of Manitoba, we see the MMF as an important and critical participant in welcoming the Grey Cup as well as the players, spectators, and dignitaries from across our country.

The Red River Cart is an important symbol of the Métis Nation; it allowed the Métis Nation to flourish in trading and freighting. Today we see the Grey Cup, an important symbol to many Canadians, being transported on a Red River Cart.

The procession between Upper Fort Garry and the Legislative Building represents the historic journey between two important places and periods of the province. Louis Riel’s Provisional Government first sat in Upper Fort Garry, located near the banks of the Assiniboine River; the current Provincial Government of Manitoba sits in the Legislative Building.

Metis Nation Elder George Fleury will be providing a prayer at the Legislative Building to bless the Grey Cup and the festival opening.

Members of the Public and the Media are invited to attend the Grey Cup Arrival Procession beginning at Upper Fort Garry and ending at the Legislative Building. Press Conference to commence at 3:15 pm at Legislative  Building.

Believe in Youself; Believe in Métis.

The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Métis Nation’s Manitoba Métis Community. The Manitoba Métis are Canada’s Negotiating Partner in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
