Manitoba Metis Federation Applauds Vision and Direction of Prime Minister for Responding to Climate Change

March 3, 2016

Vancouver, BC – Climate change is affecting the way of life for many people, including the Citizens of the Métis Nation. President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is participating in the Climate Change talks in Vancouver with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Climate change is affecting our traditional way of life,” explains President David Chartrand. “It affects our ability to effect positive economic development opportunities for our Métis Citizens. I applaud Prime Minister Trudeau’s vision and forward thinking in balancing the need for economic development with the long term preservation and conservation of our way of life.”

Effective climate change strategy takes into consideration the effects of the changes that are happening globally and the need to maintain a sustainable approach to economic development. It is imperative that these two priorities of economic development and conservation go hand in glove.

“It is of extreme importance that the MMF be included in both provincial and federal planning in regards to climate change and economic development,” states President Chartrand. “The Métis are constitutional rights bearing people. We have a traditional way of life that must be protected and we represent Manitoba’s Métis Community. We must be included in discussions that affect both our traditional way of life and affects the economic development opportunities of our people.”

As the official, democratically elected representative of Manitoba’s Métis Community, the MMF receives its constitutional authority from its Métis Citizens. As part of its mandate, it seeks to secure long-term employment and economic development opportunities for our youth.

“I am pleased Prime Minister Trudeau recognizes the importance of balancing the need for solid economic development with the need for a responsible and measured approach to climate change,” says President Chartrand. “The MMF looks forward to working with the Prime Minister on determining a sustainable way forward for our Métis Citizens.”
