Manitoba Metis Federation Statement on Joint Health Commitment for Improved Health Services in the Manitoba Métis Community

September 23, 2017

The Manitoba Metis Federation and the Government of Canada signed the historic Framework Agreement for Advancing Reconciliation on November 15, 2016 to set the stage for future negotiations. Canada’s on-going recognition of Indigenous Rights and Self-Determination discussions with the Manitoba Metis Federation are progressing well and are a demonstration of Canada’s commitment to working on a nation-to-nation, government-to-government basis with the Manitoba Metis Federation.

Today, Health Canada and the Manitoba Metis Federation are pleased to announce their joint commitment towards exploring new opportunities in health services and promotion with the objective of supporting a healthy, secure and prosperous Manitoba Métis Community.  Most recently, the Manitoba Metis Federation has put forward a program model to respond to the needs of its most vulnerable senior citizens living at or below the poverty line with supplemental health benefits that aim to strategically complement health services available to Métis people.

Minister Petitpas Taylor and President Chartrand agree to support a vision to improve the health and well-being of Manitoba Metis seniors. Our joint work is intended to form the basis of a co-developed incremental approach with the purpose of advancing health services and promotion with the Manitoba Metis Community.
