Province of Manitoba Absent from Metis Nation Health Forum

Ottawa, ON – Today representatives from across the country are gathering in Ottawa to participate in a Metis Nation Health Forum. The Manitoba Metis Federation is frustrated and disappointed by the lack of representation from the Province of Manitoba and the message that sends to the Metis Nation.

“The health of our Citizens is a priority for the Metis Nation, and the absence of the Province of Manitoba at this national forum sends a pretty clear message that our health is not a priority for them,” said David Chartrand, MMF President.

This forum is an opportunity for community members, government officials, partners and collaborators to discuss Metis Nation health needs. Part of the discussion will include a review of the MMF-commissioned report Profile of Metis Health Status and Healthcare Utilization in Manitoba: A Population-Based Study. The report was created in 2010 to identify the key health issues facing Manitoba’s Metis Citizens. Other provincial representatives are in attendance at today’s forum.

“Manitoba should have sent somebody to take part in these discussions, plain and simple,” added President Chartrand. “It’s time they demonstrate that the health of the Metis Nation means something to them.”
