Manitoba Metis Federation Applauds Federal Budget, Commitment to Metis Nation

Ottawa, ON – Today the Federal Government delivered its 2018 budget and with it, its commitment to the Metis Nation.

“I am very proud of the budget tabled by Minister Morneau today; it’s truly an answer to my prayers,” said David Chartrand, President of the MMF and Vice-President of the Metis National Council. “Since Confederation the Metis Nation has been left out in the cold. With this announcement, we can begin to see the change. Prime Minister Trudeau and his government have brought the Metis Nation back into Canada.”

Significant highlights for the Metis Nation include support for:

  • a Metis Nation housing strategy;
  • the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program;
  • Metis Nation post-secondary education; and
  • health data collection and the development of a health strategy for the Metis Nation.

“This budget provides the investment opportunity necessary to tackle many of the challenges facing the Metis Nation, including health and housing,” added President Chartrand. “Our Citizens will finally see their tax dollars put to work on their behalf.”
