The MMF Not Surprised by Exclusion in Sharing Mining Benefits
WINNIPEG, MB – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is not surprised by a press release sent out this morning by Manitoba's Pallister-led government that excludes the Métis Nation from involvement in the mining industry.
Again, the Pallister government continues to deny the legal reality that the Métis Nation must be fully, properly, and meaningfully consulted and accommodated where their constitutionally protected s.35 Aboriginal Rights may be impacted.
The Co-chairs’ Report on the Manitoba–First Nations Mineral Development Protocol attempts to exclude our Métis Nation Government, Companies, and Citizens from any benefits of the mining sector and to muzzle concerns we have about the environment and economy in our own backyards.
The news release about the report indicates, with its focus on other rights-holders and stake-holders, that this provincial government does not intend to foster positive and productive relationships between the mining industry and the Métis Nation. Indeed, with this report, it is putting obstacles in the path of prospective mineral development.
In the news release, Minister Clarke suggests that is "advancing reconciliation by building respectful and productive partnerships." For the Métis this is the opposite of reconciliation and will not facilitate mining development but, by attempting to ignore the Métis, will increase risk, delays, and costs for developers of mining projects throughout Manitoba.
This process and its resulting report is another serious shortcoming of Pallister Government. The Premier has dealt the Métis Nation another backhand and the MMF will not stand by. This is another shameful show of disrespect to our Métis Citizens.
The MMF commits to engaging in all means open to it, political and legal, towards ensuring the Métis Nation, as the Founders of this Province, will not be ignored, will share the benefits, and become true partners in all natural resources development, mining included.
Believe in Yourself; Believe in Métis.
The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Métis Nation’s Manitoba Métis Community. The Manitoba Métis are Canada’s Negotiating Partner in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
