Manitoba Metis Federation Caucus Unanimously Supports Trudeau’s Reconciliation Vision

Winnipeg, MB – This weekend the Manitoba Metis Federation’s (MMF) Cabinet, made up of Métis representatives from across the province, unanimously passed a resolution to show they fully back and stand behind President David Chartrand and Metis National Council (MNC) President, Clément Chartier, in their support of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s commitment to reconciliation.

“Since becoming the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has advanced reconciliation with the Metis Nation further than any other Prime Minister in the history of this country,” said President Chartrand. “The commitment of his government means the Métis Nation is taking its rightful place as partners in Confederation.

“I want to assure Métis Citizens that reconciliation is in full swing,” said President Chartrand. “In the federal government, there is no greater champion for the Métis people and we support his efforts to redress the past wrongs of Canada.”

The MMF Cabinet resolution follows Jody Wilson-Raybould’s resignation and subsequent testimony to the House of Common’s justice committee regarding the SNC-Lavalin affair. Several media outlets jumped to the defence of Wilson-Raybould, suggesting reconciliation might be at risk, but the Métis Nation and the federal government are still hard at work in the name of reconciliation.

Last week the governing members of the MNC signed a historic Accord to invest $450.7 million into the development of Metis Early Learning and Childcare (ELCC) across the Métis Homeland. Under the Trudeau government, the Métis Nation has seen significant investments and advances in portfolios such as governance, veterans, housing, economic development, health, employment and training, and children and families, to name a few. These investments redress the historic wrongs against the Métis Nation.

“I thank the Manitoba Métis Government Cabinet for taking such a progressive and strong position on placing its full support in the continuing working relationship between the Métis Nation and the federal government led by the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau,” stated President Clément Chartier.

“As elected officials we were elected to advocate for Métis Citizens for important issues like housing, child care as well as Métis veterans, and the immense progress on these issues would not be possible with any other government,” says Will Goodon, Minister of Housing and Property. “Reconciliation is not only about two people, and we must remember the 180-degree turn that that has taken place since the Liberals took office in 2015.”
