Pallister Guts Reconciliation with the Manitoba Métis Government
Winnipeg, MB - On April 17, 2019, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) received a letter from the Pallister government cancelling the province’s support for self-government negotiations between Manitoba, Canada, and the MMF. This cancellation is one of several such notices sent from the province in the last year to the Manitoba Métis Government, the MMF.
“Pallister and his government can peddle the language of reconciliation all they want,” stated President David Chartrand. “Their actions speak louder than words. They have no interest in the rights of the Métis People. They have no respect for the Métis Nation as rights-bearing Aboriginal People. There is no relationship between the province and the MMF. Yet when tax time comes, Pallister’s government trips over itself rushing to collect from our hard-working Métis People. He likes to take much and give nothing, except maybe to his rich friends.”
Since 1987, the Federal Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Métis Government have been working through the tripartite negotiation process. Pallister’s recent decision to cut the support represents a significant shift from the long-standing process that ensured an avenue for government-to-government conversations between the Manitoba Métis and the two levels of government.
“The Pallister government ignores history at their peril, for what – a personal vendetta? The Manitoba Métis founded this province. We ushered Manitoba into Confederation as negotiating partners with Canada. We were and are an economic powerhouse in this province. We were here long before Pallister’s government and we will be here long after he is gone.”
Believe in Yourself; Believe in Métis.
The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Métis Nation’s Manitoba Métis Community. The Manitoba Métis are Canada’s Negotiating Partner in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
