Manitoba Metis Federation Praises Bill C-99

Winnipeg, MB – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) supports Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen and welcomes the proposed changes to Canada’s citizenship oath. Introduced yesterday as Bill C-99, the changes will require new Canadians to swear they will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of the Métis Nation and other Aboriginal Peoples.

"Bill C-99 is another important step in the right direction towards reconciliation," said MMF President David Chartrand. "The Métis Nation is a rights-bearing Indigenous People, the Founders of Manitoba, and Canada’s Negotiating Partner in Confederation. We welcome new Canadians to learn about us and our important contributions to Canada."

The oath will promote an environment in which new Canadians are encouraged join us in building a just and fair country respecting the constitutionally protected rights of the Metis Nation, as well as all Indigenous Peoples, and indeed all Canadians. The proposed change will raise awareness of our Métis rights among new Canadians, who will continue to have an important role in preserving those Canadian values we all cherish and for which many have sacrificed their lives.

"If all parties respect the Indigenous Peoples, our Constitutional rights, and our place in Confederation, then this can pass into law quite quickly and easily. I would expect Parliament will make this law a reality," added President Chartrand. "Given how far we have come, and what’s at stake, this is a ‘no brainer.’ It could be done in a day if all parties recognize its importance to reconciliation and the future of Canadian Federalism."
