MMF President David Chartrand

This past week, I was invited as speaker to address a Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce luncheon to speak about our recent MMF Land Claim Decision. Moving forward on the Claim, to finish the “unfinished business of Canadian Confederation,” our first steps will be set up a negotiation process with the federal government towards a fair settlement for our people.

The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing political representative for the Metis Nation’s Manitoba Metis Community.

The MMF promotes the political, social, cultural, and economic interests and rights of the Metis in Manitoba. In addition, the MMF delivers programs and services to our community including: child and family services; justice; housing; youth; education; human resources; economic development and natural resources.

Founded in 1967 by a group of forward-thinking Metis who realized that it was necessary to stand up and fight for the rights of the Metis people of Manitoba. Decades later, the MMF has grown to over 600 staff and consists of seven Regions throughout the Province, with each of those Regions being divided into community Locals.

The Metis

The Metis are a people of North American Indian and European ancestry who coalesced into a distinct nation in the northwest in the late 18th century.
