Canada and MMF announce new funding for infrastructure

August 13, 2021

Winnipeg, MB, in the Metis Nation Homeland - Today, the Canadian Government has announced that they will be investing $200 million to support Métis Nation's infrastructure needs. Of this, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) will receive $50 million to address our economic, social, and cultural infrastructure priorities. The agreement begins in the 2021/22 fiscal year and will runfor 4 years.

"Through no fault of our own, the Métis have long been behind when it comes to infrastructure in our villages," said MMF President, David Chartrand. "That being said, this is a significant first step and is the first federal investment in Métis infrastructure."

Your Métis Government recognizes that access to quality infrastructure - including adequate health, cultural, educational, and community facilities - is critical to the mental, physical, and economic well-being of the Red River Métis.

"I would like to thank the Trudeau government for this vital and substantial investment into the Red River Métis," said President Chartrand. "A distinctions-based infrastructure investment was a large commitment by his government and once again they made good on their pledge to begin closing the infrastructure gap that exists between the Red River Métis and other Canadian Citizens."

"Not only will this investment go into building much needed infrastructure in our communities, but it will also create positive economic spin-offs throughout our villages and beyond," said President Chartrand. "As with all our investments, we will ensure that this is done will be done in ways that support and develop thriving communities for our families and future generations."
