History Made as MMF Hosts First Ever Local Meeting

August 12, 2019

Winnipeg, MB - The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) has just made history by creating a Two-Spirit Michif Local. (2SLGBTQ)

"I am so proud to welcome the newly created Two-Spirit Michif Local to the family," said MMF President, David Chartrand. "As a Métis Government and People, we always celebrate inclusion and diversity. The creation of this Local embodies who we are."

The inaugural meeting was hosted by MMF's Winnipeg region. Close to thirty Citizens, allies and community members were in attendance.

The Two-Spirit Michif Local has been over a year in the making. It was created to represent and organize 2SLGBTQ Métis people and its allies along with promoting the objectives of the MMF and ensure these objectives consider 2SLGBTQ Métis needs.

Along with the creation of the Local, the meeting featured the election of officers including Nicki Ferland as the first-ever Chair. Charlotte Nolan was voted in as Vice Chair and Dr. Chantal Fiola as Secretary-Treasurer.

"I want to congratulate the Executive members on their new leadership roles," added President Chartrand. "Like so many Métis leaders before them, I know they will summon the courage and fortitude to create lasting and positive outcomes for the people they serve."

MMF Ministers Anita Campbell, Andrew Carrier, JoAnne Remillard, and David Beaudin were also in attendance to help officiate the meeting, along with Métis Elder Barbara Bruce.
