Minister Goodon represents Red River Métis at COP26 Climate Summit

November 4, 2021

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Will Goodon, as a member of the Indigenous Circle of Experts and the Minister of Housing with the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), is representing the Red River Métis at the COP26 UN Climate Summit in Scotland.

The two-week summit is taking place from October 31-November 12 in Glasgow and sees leaders from across the world commit to tackling environmental issues and slowing down the effects of climate change, by securing enough pledges to make an impact in the coming years. A large focus of this year's Summit is to cut greenhouse gas emissions, which will slow down the rise of the average global temperature, with the intention of keeping warming below 1.5 degrees. More than 100 leaders have already promised to end deforestation by 2030, securing the first deal of the COP26 Summit.

The UN Climate Summits are often attended by politicians and activists, many who have been at the forefront of grassroots movements. Individuals attend from across the globe to lend a voice to how climate change is creating a lasting impact on their communities, traditions, and cultures. Minister Goodon has also attended the COP23, 24 and 25 Summits.

"It will send a message that the Red River Métis are taking our international and environmental issues seriously. We represent the true Métis Nation," said Minister Goodon of his attendance.

Your Red River Métis Government takes environmental issues very seriously as our culture has always prioritized the protection and preservation of our natural resources, climate, and wildlife. It is a pillar of our culture and the MMF is looking forward to taking our perspectives, priorities, and teachings as stewards of the lands, water, and air to an international level. Now that we have a seat at the table, we can represent the Red River Métis and make a meaningful global impact on these important issues.

The MMF will continue to focus on our land-based education as we teach the Youth how to preserve our traditions and culture. Working together we can further the message of the Red River Métis in our nation-to-nation, government-to-government, and international relationships.
