MMF answers call to all Manitobans to combat COVID-19

Winnipeg, MB - As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate Manitoba and overwhelm our health care system, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) announced yesterday in an interview with APTN that its 96-bed isolation facility is open to all Manitobans.

In partnership with Métis N4 Construction, in the spring of 2020 the Metis government mobilized the secure facility upon the onset of the virus in Manitoba.

In a November 18 letter, MMF President David Chartrand extended an olive branch to Premier Brian Pallister, making him aware of the 96-bed COVID isolation facility and that it is open for all Manitobans to use. Located near Treherne, the facility has been transformed from a construction work camp previously used on the Enbridge Line 3 project to a fully equipped isolation facility complete with kitchen, laundry, recreational area and other related functions.

This announcement comes in response to the recent media reports surfacing that the Manitoba government is considering the use of recreational facilities, such as hockey rinks, to develop health-related services to support the overburdened hospitals by providing space for more beds.

"The mobilization of the facility in the spring is part of the MMF's proactive strategy to support Métis Citizens, and all Manitobans, during the COVID crisis and to mitigate its impacts on our province," commented President Chartrand. "Throughout the pandemic, the MMF has remained committed to working as a team with Manitoba to help combat this deadly virus."
