MMF Celebrates Grand Opening of Willow Bay Development

October 29, 2021

Portage la Prairie, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Metis - Today, as part of the ongoing commitment to affordable, safe and accessible housing for Métis Citizens across the province, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) celebrates the grand opening of the Willow Bay housing development in Portage la Prairie.

The Willow Bay development consists of one family housing triplex with one 2-bedroom unit and two 3-bedroom units, as well as two seniors housing duplexes, for a total of seven affordable housing rental units.

"Our Citizens in the Southwest Region have told us of the need for safe, affordable housing for Métis families and seniors," said Will Goodon, Minister of Housing and Property Development for the MMF. "The Willow Bay development is one more step towards ensuring all Métis Citizens have access to safe, accessible and affordable housing."

The Willow Bay development was funded through the Canada-Métis Nation Housing Sub-Accord signed in 2018. This agreement is the result of the nation-to-nation, government-to-government relationship between Canada and the Red River Métis, and without that relationship, projects like Willow Bay would not be possible.

"Not only has this investment built much needed housing for our Métis Citizens, but it has created positive economic spin-offs throughout the local community and employment opportunities for Métis workers. This investment helps support and develop thriving communities for our families and future generations," said Minister Goodon.

The Willow Bay development is now accepting applications. For rental enquiries, please contact the MMF Housing Department at 204-586-8474 ext. 230.
