MMF Celebrates New Affordable Housing Build in the Vibrant Métis Neighbourhood of St. Boniface

October 8, 2020

Winnipeg, MB - The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) will be celebrating the beginning of a new housing build at 184 Eugenie Street in the historic Métis neighbourhood of St. Boniface with a ground-breaking ceremony. The event is today, October 8at 11:00 a.m.

This project is a six-plex and will include one four-bedroom unit, two three-bedroom units, and three two-bedroom units. All units are designated as affordable housing and will feature in-suite laundry, open concept kitchens and air conditioning. The construction of these rental units will be completed in early Summer 2021.

"Initiatives like these are also not possible without the feedback and engagement of our Métis Citizens," stated MMF Minister of Housing and Property Management Will Goodon. "Through our Annual General Assembly and various regional meetings, our Citizens always remind us that having safe, accessible, and affordable housing is an utmost priority."

The MMF is currently undertaking housing projects in Portage la Prairie and Selkirk, as well as additional construction projects scattered throughout the province that focus on other Manitoba Métis Government priorities.

The MMF will be investing approximately $1.7 million in this project and generate more benefits through socioeconomic spinoffs.

"Our housing projects are about more than just economic benefits," commented MMF President David Chartrand. "It is also about the ability to make sure that our units are affordable to those who may otherwise struggle to get sheltered.

"These new builds will be supporting Métis families that may not have otherwise had an opportunity to have a new home," President Chartrand continued. "Our housing priorities have been set by our Citizens since day one. The Métis Nation always values our Elders, so affordable senior housing is our top priority, and the Métis cherish our families, so affordable family housing is a close second. We continue to work to provide the various types of residential units required to meet the needs of our people."
