MMF disappointed by latest nomination to the Supreme Court of Canada

Winnipeg, MB, in the Homeland of the Métis Nation - Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the nomination of the Honourable Mahmud Jamal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF), along with other Indigenous governments and organizations, has advocated for the next Supreme Court Justice nomination to come from within the Indigenous community.

"With the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system, and in the era of truth and reconciliation, it's an obvious missed opportunity to further advance Canada's relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF. "While we appreciate the appointment of a highly respected judge in Mahmud Jamal, and his representation of a minority community, it is disappointing that the government did not choose to further educate the Supreme Court about the Métis Nation."

The MMF was in support of a nomination from any of the three Indigenous Peoples of Canada but would have found greater confidence in Canada's judicial system with the appointment of Justice Todd Ducharme. Like Louis Riel, Justice Ducharme was born in St. Boniface, and is the first Métis person to be appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

"We were hopeful that this nomination would give Canadians an opportunity to see a person from Métis Nation within the Supreme Court, demonstrating Canada's commitment to judicial representation from the western provinces and the Nation that founded Manitoba," said President Chartrand. "To date, there has never been an Indigenous Supreme Court Justice. We feel sadness that we must still wait for this to happen, especially since we don't know when this opportunity will come again."

La FMM déçue par la dernière nomination à la Cour suprême du Canada

Winnipeg (Manitoba), dans la patrie de la Nation métisse - Aujourd'hui, le premier ministre Justin Trudeau a annoncé la nomination de l'honorable Mahmud Jamal à la Cour suprême du Canada.

La Fédération Métisse du Manitoba (FMM), ainsi que d'autres gouvernements et organisations autochtones, ont plaidé pour que la prochaine nomination de juge à la Cour suprême provienne de la communauté autochtone.

« Avec la surreprésentation des peuples autochtones dans le système de justice pénale et à l'ère de vérité et de réconciliation, c'est une occasion manquée évidente de faire progresser davantage la relation du Canada avec les peuples autochtones du pays, a déclaré David Chartrand, président de la FMM. Bien que nous appréciions la nomination de Mahmud Jamal, un juge très respecté, ainsi que sa représentation d'une communauté minoritaire, il est décevant que le gouvernement n'ait pas choisi d'informer davantage la Cour suprême sur la Nation métisse. »

La FMM a accordé son appui à la nomination de l'un des trois peuples autochtones du Canada, mais aurait trouvé une plus grande confiance dans le système judiciaire avec la nomination du juge Todd Ducharme. Comme Louis Riel, le juge Ducharme est né à Saint-Boniface et est le premier Métis à être nommé à la Cour supérieure de justice de l'Ontario.

« Nous espérions que cette nomination donnerait aux Canadiens l'occasion de voir une personne de la Nation métisse au sein de la Cour suprême, démontrant ainsi l'engagement du Canada envers la représentation judiciaire des provinces de l'Ouest et de la nation qui a fondé le Manitoba, a ajouté le président Chartrand. À ce jour, il n'y a jamais eu de juge autochtone à la Cour suprême. Nous sommes tristes de devoir encore attendre que cela se produise, d'autant plus que nous ne savons pas quand cette opportunité se présentera à nouveau. »
