MMF experiences historic mass acclamation of all elected officials

May 24, 2022

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis, announced the results of the 2022 election process.

As of May 12, 2022 at 5:00 p.m., the window closed for Red River Métis Citizens to submit their nomination forms and announce their intent to run in the 2022 Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) Election. The period for challenges to candidates ended May 20, 2022 at 5:00 p.m., which means that the election process period has closed with unprecedented and historic results.

For the third election in a row, David Chartrand been acclaimed by Citizens, with a clear mandate to continue in the role of President. This will be his 8th term as President of the MMF and leader of the Red River Métis.

"It is truly an honour that the Red River Métis across the Homeland have demonstrated their faith in my leadership for another term," said newly re-elected President David Chartrand. "Like many around the Cabinet table, I have dedicated the majority of my life to supporting our Red River Métis Citizens and building the MMF into what it is today. I am humbled and honoured, and I thank Citizens for their continued trust in me."

In an historic first, all incumbent members of MMF Cabinet will also be returning, having been acclaimed in all seven regions. This has not happened since 1967, when the constitution was formally introduced. John Parenteau of the Northwest Region opted not to run, paving the way for Peter Fleming to replace him by acclamation.

"Our elected officials are the backbone of our government, and our success has only been possible because of our strength as a team," said President Chartrand. "I've spoken to many of the incumbent elected leaders, and I know they are also deeply grateful for the confidence of our Citizens. As a team, we thank John Parenteau for his years of service as an executive for the Northwest Region, and wish him well, wherever his journey takes him. Peter Fleming is a well known and experienced leader in the Northwest, having led the Minitonas Local for more than ten years, which speaks to his dedication to our Citizens and his experience supporting them. I fully expect the Northwest Region to continue flourishing with the strength of the team there."

"There are over a thousand individuals who have served Red River Metis Citizens over the years and are qualified to run for these positions, so an uncontested election across the slate is truly remarkable," said President Chartrand. "To me, it speaks to the unity of the Red River Métis and their awareness of the massive accomplishments of the Metis Government since the 2018 election. Citizens always know we have their backs. Through this election, they have shown that they have our backs as well, and appreciate the transparent and accountable governance we consistently deliver. Citizens clearly want us to continue focusing on the critical business of advancing our Nation - that is what we will do."
