Planting the seeds for the future growth: MMF making focused investments in food security for Red River Métis Citizens

October 14, 2022

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, is concerned about the rising costs of food and the impact it has on our Nation and our families.

"The rising cost of food is something that is simply not sustainable for Canadians, and that includes our Red River Métis Citizens," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF. "Food security is a growing concern, one that requires significant strategic thought and discussion to find innovative solutions. This is why our Cabinet has approved an investment in seven new food security greenhouses across Manitoba, which will yield an estimated 100,000 pounds of vegetables per year for our Citizens."

The MMF will also be announcing details to Citizens around plans for a further, large-scale food security greenhouse investment at the Annual General Assembly, happening October 14-16 at the Assiniboia Downs.

Along with investing in fresh vegetables and encouraging Citizens to plant gardens, the MMF continues to support the traditions of canning and preserving, which are of historical significance to our Nation that remain strong. Along with learning about traditional skills like beading and sewing, and harvesting from the land, our Elders continue to teach both canning and preserving to our Youth, through events like our Elder/Youth Conference, which took place in August of this year.

To further promote these important traditions, the MMF is hosting its 2nd Annual Pickler Classic. The response to the event has been overwhelming, with organizers receiving submissions from many Red River Métis Citizens.

"Canning, pickling and preserving have always been an important part of harvesting from the land and ensuring the health and well-being of our families throughout our Nation's history," said President Chartrand. "With the rising costs of food today, keeping this tradition strong is not only important to our culture, it is also a great way for families to keep their diets healthy and reduce food waste. We are planting the seeds for the future growth and vitality of our Nation."

The judging and the announcement of the winner will take place on Sunday, October 16, on the final day of the MMF's Annual General Assembly.
