Special statement by President David Chartrand on the installation of Heather Stefanson as Manitoba's first female Premier

October 31, 2021

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Today, the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba selected their next leader and the new Premier of Manitoba - Heather Stefanson.

Including Louis Riel, the first Premier and Founder of the Province of Manitoba, this makes her the 25th Premier of Manitoba.

The Red River Métis have a long history of being a strong, matriarchal society, where women's voices are valued and respected. We are happy to see the province we created taking a note from that proud history.

The Manitoba Métis Federation, as the National Government of the Red River Métis, congratulates Premier Stefanson on her victory.

It's no secret that the previous leader of government in Manitoba actively created division between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, threatened to remove parents' voices from the education system and made it more difficult for farmers and ranchers to use Crown Land.

It is our sincere hope that Heather Stefanson brings a new voice and a new perspective to governing this province and healing the rifts that have been created. If she does, we look forward to working with her and her team to bring about a better tomorrow in Manitoba.
