Meet the female Red River Métis athletes competing on Team Manitoba for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

May 5, 2023

Indigenous athletes from around the nation are preparing to come to Winnipeg for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships' (NAHC) 20th anniversary.

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) has partnered with the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council (MASRC) to support our Red River Métis athletes. Last year, the MMF donated $50,000 to the MASRC for the 2023 NAHC. The MMF is proud to support the championships and showcase our high-level athletes.

"It's a big milestone for Indigenous hockey in Canada," said Richard Genaille, Minister of Sports and Youth. "We're very excited to be a partner with the host of this great tournament that's going to showcase a lot of our Red River Métis talent that we have in Manitoba."

As part of a targeted investment into professional and structured sports development for Red River Métis Youth, the MMF supports Red River Métis Youth elite athletes through the Believe Athletic and Artistic Support Program.

Through a variety of camps, the MMF is committed to introducing Youth to the fundamentals of sports so they can develop their skills.

"Our sports camps pique new interest in Youth. Some may have never experienced participating in hockey," said Minister Genaille. "It's not something that maybe their families could afford to put their kids in, so having this program allows them access to be able to try new things or gain new skills, along with sportsmanship and building teamwork skills."

Your Red River Métis Government also offers $350 for Youth towards registered arts, culture, sports, and recreation activities through the Individual Youth Sponsorship.

"You know the high cost of registration for sports, especially when you play hockey, the price of participation is expensive," said Minister Genaille. "Investing $350 in Youth is paying off, because we've got high-calibre athletes representing Manitoba now".

This high-calibre tournament showcases Canada's best young Indigenous athletes, from U18 AAA, Prep School, and junior hockey. Seven female teams and eight male squads will compete in two separate tournaments to bring home the gold medal.

"As a Red River Métis assistant coach, it is a privilege to be able to lead the best U18 Indigenous players in Manitoba to the NAHC championships," said Katie Bassett, assistant coach for Team Manitoba. "This tournament is a very meaningful experience for both myself and the players. This competition is a fantastic chance to highlight our team's abilities and culture. Being able to guide and mentor these players is a rewarding privilege."

The tournament runs from May 8-13 at Seven Oaks Sportsplex. The U18 Indigenous male and female athletes will compete in separate round-robin tournaments. Last year, the female Team Manitoba squad remained undefeated to bring home the gold in Membertou, Nova Scotia, and 10 returning players are looking to reclaim the title once again.

Fourteen Red River Métis athletes round out the roster of 20 U18 Indigenous players on Team Manitoba. Here are the female Red River Métis athletes competing at the 2023 NAHC!
