Meet the Red River Métis Citizen working on more than 400 remediation claims during the 2026 Manitoba floods

As floods impact Manitobans across the province, damaging infrastructure and family homes, Rick Perrin and his team at Denver Property Restoration Services Inc. are taking on over 400 remediation claims to help restore crucial businesses and people's homes in a time of crisis.

The Red River Métis entrepreneur and his team are currently working on the child care centre at 200 Main Street, one of the Manitoba Métis Federation's (MMF) offices.

"We're removing all the flooring and we're removing drywall... we really have to make sure that everything is clean and disinfected properly, dried, and put back together in a good way so that when the little kiddies come back, [it's] safe," said Perrin. "So, there's a big responsibility there."

The Red River Métis Citizen has worked in fire and flood restoration for around 30 years before starting his own company in 2012. In the 14 years since starting Denver Property Restoration Services Inc., it has grown to employ over 60 employees, which is one of the reasons it can respond to so many jobs.

The flood remediation process includes removing wet materials, such as drywall and flooring, and addressing any contaminations such as sewage and mould.

"You basically remove anything that's wet... then we'll set up our drying," said Perrin. "After that's all done, we'll do what we call a rebuild estimate to put everything back together the way it was."

As the team at Denver Property Restoration Services Inc. works with people at some of the most stressful times of their lives, they hope to make the process as easy as possible.

"It's always been a good feeling to be in the restoration business because it is a business of helping people," he said. "[People are] basically at their wit's end, their beautiful basement is flooded and their things are floating everywhere... all their memorabilia, their pictures, and anything that's of value is gone... we try to help the client [by bringing] it back to what it was in a timely fashion and to make it not too painful of a journey for them."

Perrin's company offers multiple levels of remediation training to their employees - water mitigation, smoke mitigation, trauma cleaning, and meth cleaning. This ensures the highest standard of skill building, creating a talented, capable, and well-rounded team.

In addition to offering training for their employees, Perrin and his team also provide training to northern communities.

"A lot of [remediation] is remote... to basically fly in a restoration company costs a lot of money," he said. "So, we're trying to get out there and train anybody that we're working with in any northern community [to do] what we do and supply them with the equipment that we have so they can go ahead and do their own remediation."

Working with northern communities has been a passion of Perrin's since the beginning of his career.

"I have basically two divisions in my company, and my division is the Northern Division. That's my passion. You know, the culture, the people. Everyone up there is very welcoming," he said. "My company is very committed to northern communities all over Manitoba."

Not only does Perrin appreciate the culture of Indigenous communities up north, but he also feels an immense sense of pride anytime he's working with his Red River Métis Government.

"It's my people, my sense of pride... to be a small part of the MMF. [This] is what my company does, and we help the MMF with their properties [and] whatever they need," he said. "Whenever I get a phone call, 'Rick, we need you here, we need you there,' it's great. You know, there's that sense of pride and a sense of urgency [with] the MMF... you've got to be on board to meet those expectations."

President David Chartrand is a personal inspiration to the Red River Métis entrepreneur.

"I really look up to [President] Chartrand and what he's done with the MMF and the people he's surrounded himself with," Perrin said. "There's probably not a man that I know that's more passionate about what he does. And what he's done with the MMF from way back in the day and with his blood, sweat, and tears. David Chartrand's been able to transform the MMF into what it is today."

The MMF has supported Denver Property Restoration Services Inc. since the very beginning, helping Perrin through the Louis Riel Capital Corporation, the MMF's affiliate lending institution.

"A long time ago when I first started Denver Property Restoration, I had no money, zero money, and I was still going for it. I kept telling people, 'I can do your work, but I have no money, so you have to pay me fast,'" he said. "I did go see the [Louis Riel Capital Corporation] and they helped me with the business plan so that I could get some funding... I got a little bit of money to get started. So, it was very helpful."

Today, Perrin's business has grown exponentially, and he hopes to keep building momentum.

"I feel proud, humbled, but it wasn't easy and it's still not easy. It's like every day's a grind," said the Citizen. "You're dealing with human beings, and we've got 60-plus employees. We're gradually trying to keep growing the company and just keep training good people."
