Red River Métis artisans gather at MMF's Artisan Workshop event

Renowned artisan Melanie Gamache shared the story of how she turned her business, Borealis Beading, into a nationally and internationally recognized cultural experience.

The Red River Métis Artist and Artisan Workshop event, hosted by the Manitoba Métis Federation's (MMF) Economic Development Department, was a three-day event packed full of different workshops and activities for Red River Métis artisans to enjoy. The event capped off the Red River Métis Artist and Artisan Entrepreneurship Initiative, an initiative designed to assist Red River Métis artisans with strengthening their entrepreneurial skills.

Day one kicked off bright and early with a cultural storytelling workshop by Melanie Gamache, in which she shared her heartwarming journey with the room.

"It's healing to be able to use your story as part of your healing and artworks," said Gamache. "It's kind of an interesting little combination of things that could be used to help not only yourself, but the people who are out there listening... we need to share what we haven't lost."

Red River Métis artisan Janet La France felt the impact of Gamache's story.

"The presentation was great. I really liked how natural it was," said La France. "She really spoke from the heart. I like the sense of community, and I like the sense of reciprocity in sharing."

Our artisans carry generations of knowledge in their work, and when we invest in them, we are investing in both our cultural strength and the economic future of our communities. - President David Chartrand

Following the cultural storytelling workshop, a Q and A took place with the Red River Métis Marketplace, Red River Métis Business Association, and Louis Riel Capital Corporation. The day ended with an intellectual property workshop. Artisans had the opportunity to engage with one another the entire day and learn valuable tools from various sources.

The second day began with a Procurement Assistance Canada presentation and a visit to the Beading Métis Resurgence exhibit at the University of Winnipeg's Gallery 1C03. afternoon was dedicated to cohort mentorship sessions in which artisans listened and told their stories to one another.

"Having a cohort that you're essentially going through a program with builds a closeness and it builds potential partnerships right into the course," said La France.

Shannon Tara Kalić, a participant of the initiative, was selected by the High Commission of India to attend the Bharat Tribes Fest 2026 in New Delhi, India.

"Seeing one of our artisans, Shannon Tara Kalić, invited to represent the Red River Métis at Bharat Tribal Fest in New Delhi is something we are incredibly proud of," said MMF President David Chartrand. "It shows that the talent within our community is being recognized on a global stage and that Red River Métis culture continues to inspire people around the world."

On March 19, artisans were able to put what they've learned over the past two days towards the Red River Métis Artist and Artisan Entrepreneurship Initiative Makers Market. For three hours the market was live with artisans selling their handmade pieces.

That evening, the Red River Métis Gallery Showcase opened to invited guests. Artisans showcased their work to industry buyers, celebrating the final night.

The three-day event highlighted just how much the initiative is strengthening the Red River Métis Community.

The Red River Métis Artist and Artisan Entrepreneurship Initiative Makers Market was swimming with Red River Métis talent and expertise.

"For generations, Red River Métis artisans supported their families through their skill and creativity," said President Chartrand. "Through the Red River Métis Artist and Artisan Entrepreneurship Initiative, we are making sure our Citizens have the tools and opportunities to turn that talent into successful businesses while continuing to share and celebrate our culture."
