Election For Red River Métis Government Set
May 11, 2026
The Red River Métis will be heading to the polls to elect a new Cabinet. An election for the Cabinet is required under the MMF Constitution in 2026.
DAVID GRAY, Chief Electoral Officer for the MMF - the National Government of the Red River Métis - today confirmed that the MMF Cabinet had passed a resolution directing him to call an election and set a date for the MMF Cabinet. JUNE 23, 2026, has been set as the election date. There are twenty-two (22) positions open for election, namely:
- President of the Manitoba Métis Federation;
- One (1) Vice-President of the Manitoba Métis Federation for each of the Winnipeg, Southeast, Southwest, Interlake, Northwest, The Pas, and Thompson Regions; and
- Two (2) Regional Executive Officers of the Manitoba Métis Federation for each of the Winnipeg, Southeast, Southwest, Interlake, Northwest, The Pas, and Thompson Regions.
Nominations for all are now open and will close on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. The Spokeswoman for the Infinity Women Secretariat (IWS), ANITA CAMPBELL, is also a member of the MMF Cabinet, having been elected at the IWS AGM held on September 13, 2025.
The MMF Cabinet is an integral part of the MMF governance structure and is subject only to the directions of the General Assembly. The MMF is composed of seven (7) Regions, each of which comprises Locals within the Region. The detailed governance of the Red River Métis is overseen primarily at the Cabinet level.
The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the MMF and directs the 1,300 employees in conducting the directives of the Assembly and the Cabinet. He is also the primary spokesperson for the Red River Métis and represents the Nation in discussions with governments and business.
The seven Regions are each represented at Cabinet by three Regional Executives, who also provide direct governance for their respective Regions and supervision and support for the Locals in that Region.
Between January 5, 2026, and May 4, 2026, the MMF Elections Office, under the direction of the Chief Electoral Officer, has completed the election of all executive positions for 108 active Locals in the province.
David Gray went on to say, "The MMF and the Red River Métis have a long tradition of democracy starting before Manitoba was even a province. The electoral process must be open, transparent, and governed entirely by the Constitution and the Rules governing elections. It is vital for the MMF and any democratic government to have people step up, if they wish to serve, and run for office. It is equally important that our 60,000 Citizens exercise their franchise when elections are held. Voting is the opportunity for Citizens to select their leadership."
Citizens can also vote by mail if they are members of Locals in remote areas or reside outside of Manitoba. The deadline to apply for mail-in ballots is June 1, 2026.
