Métis Government Responds to Code Red

November 2, 2020

Manitoba is entering the second wave of COVID. All prior predictions by experts were right: the second wave is much worse than the first.

In response, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is restarting previously offered supports, as well as initiating new programs to support our Métis Citizens who are being negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MMF has already restarted its province-wide hamper program to support shut-ins, seniors, and other vulnerable Citizens in their effort to stay inside and protect their loved ones and community. In order to receive one of these hampers, please contact 204-586-8474.

The MMF also recognizes the negative impacts that the mandatory closures will have on all businesses. Time and time again, all of us have asked so much of these businesses, and now is the time for us to give back.

"Not only has Canada answered the call and offered a wide variety of supports tailored to businesses and entrepreneurs across Canada, but they have also recognized the importance of partnering with Indigenous Governments to help address our unique needs," commented MMF President David Chartrand. "We have openly praised the Trudeau government and their response and approach to this unprecedented challenge that is COVID-19.

"During the first wave, the MMF offered $40,000 loans to Métis entrepreneurs. This helped, but is it enough?" questioned President Chartrand.

Today, the MMF is setting aside $5.5 million to assist businesses during the upcoming two-week closure. Eligible businesses will be able to receive a non-repayable grant of $10,000 so long as they promise to stay open after code red restrictions are over.

"Investments made by entrepreneurs are the backbone of our economy. No one hesitates to collect their taxes, but yet some leaders hesitate to offer support in their times of need," continued President Chartrand. "But rest assured, our Métis families and businesses can rely on their Métis Government to support them in these uncertain times."

Métis entrepreneurs who are negatively affected by the recently implemented code red restrictions and closure in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas can contact Louis Riel Capital Corporation at 1-800-387-6004 for more information and to apply for this new funding.
