MMF celebrates inauguration of Red River Métis Caucus
July 15, 2026
Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Last night, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, celebrated the inauguration of the Red River Métis Government's newly elected Caucus, formally beginning a new term for the government.
"Inauguration Day for the Red River Métis Government is a meaningful event for our Nation, and for our newly elected officials, their families and our Citizens," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF. "It is an opportunity to reflect on the work of our Ancestors, including the provisional government that ushered Manitoba into Confederation. When we are sworn in by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, it reminds us of the role we played in building this province and the role we play today. It reminds us that we not only have a responsibility to our Citizens, but also to the province we created."
The event was well attended by members of the community and dignitaries, including: the Honourable Renée Cable, Minister of Advanced Education and Training for Manitoba; His Worship Scott Gillingham, Mayor of Winnipeg; RCMP Superintendent Scott McMurchy; Winnipeg Chief of Police Gene Bowers; and others.
The official swearing-in was presided over by the Honourable Anita Neville, P.C., O.M., Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.
"I have great confidence in the will of our Citizens, and there is no doubt in my mind that they have chosen wisely in their leadership," said President Chartrand. "I look forward to engaging with both the returning leaders and new ones, as we take on the awesome responsibility of shepherding our Nation into a brighter future. This is the work I have dedicated my life to accomplishing. Together with this Caucus, there is no doubt in my mind that we will achieve good things for our Citizens. While we will never truly know what we would have accomplished if we'd been allowed to live and govern ourselves as a people from the beginning, today we are clearly advancing the important work of finding our rightful place in Canada's Confederation."
The inaugural meeting of the MMF Caucus is taking place today. Portfolios and mandates will be delivered to the Caucus by President Chartrand, along with the vision for this term.
