New child care facility in Winnipeg creates economic opportunity for the city and culturally focused education for Red River Métis children
December 2, 2025
Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) proudly celebrates the grand opening of Little Fox Child Care Centre, located at 200 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. This brand-new facility offers 40 spaces for infants and preschool-aged children, providing high-quality, culturally focused early learning for Red River Métis families.
The Little Fox Child Care Centre is designed to foster Red River Métis identity and pride, while providing the MMF's first on-site child care option. This centre will support employees in returning to work, strengthening both the local economy and our government's capacity.
"Continuing to expand our ability to provide children with a place of their own that celebrates their heritage and instills pride is something that is of great importance to us," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF. "It's worth remembering that we had to build every single child care centre from the ground up, because there had been no prior investment in our children - the progress we've made has been as fast as it has been critical to advancing our Nation."
At Little Fox Child Care Centre, programming will reflect and celebrate Red River Métis culture, language, and heritage. Daily activities include storytelling, arts and crafts that lean into traditions, and land-based learning experiences that connect children with their environment and community.
Frances Chartrand, Minister of Early Learning & Child Care at the MMF, continues to be a strong advocate for the well-being of our youngest Citizens, ensuring they have sustainable access to high-quality, culturally appropriate child care that supports their early development needs while also securing programming that reflects their Red River Métis identity.
"We've seen firsthand how transformative these centres are for our families and communities," said Minister Chartrand. "Quality child care is essential, but quality child care that connects our children to their Red River Métis heritage is powerful. When we invest in our children in this way, we are investing in our future."
