Seven Incumbent Cabinet Members declared elected by acclamation in Red River Métis National Election - elections being contested for 15 other positions

June 2, 2026

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - David Gray, Chief Electoral Officer for the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, confirmed today that David Chartrand, the incumbent President of the MMF, and six other returning Cabinet members are declared elected by acclamation.

There were 22 positions open for election: the President of the Manitoba Métis Federation, one Vice-President of the Manitoba Métis Federation for each of the seven Regions, and two Regional Executive Officers for each of the seven Regions. Nominations closed on May 25, 2026, and Red River Métis Citizens had the right to challenge any nominee's constitutional qualifications until 5 p.m. on June 1, 2026.

Mr. Gray went on to say, "Citizens had seven days to challenge the constitutional qualifications for candidates from May 25, 2026. None of the persons running unopposed faced any challenge. One candidate was challenged, but the challenge was determined to be unfounded. One other candidate withdrew from the election. As a result, 27 candidates will vie for the remaining 15 positions in the Cabinet."

The following is the list of persons declared elected:

Denise Thomas, Southeast Regional Vice-President; Andrew Carrier, Winnipeg Regional Vice-President; Judy Mayer, The Pas Regional Vice-President;

Frances Chartrand, Northwest Regional Vice-President; Shawn Nault, Southeast Regional Executive Officer; and Marielle Gauthier, Southeast Regional Executive Officer.

There are more than 60,000 Red River Métis eligible as electors in this National Election.

Voting will start on June 13, 2026, and end on election day, June 23, 2026. On election day, 50 polling places will be open across the six Regions holding elections. There are polls across Manitoba, with advance polls on five days at 25 locations. There is at least one advance poll on two days in each of the six Regions where elections are held. There may be additional days set for advance polls within the next week.

According to the MMF Constitution, the MMF must hold an election for President and other MMF Vice-President and Regional Executive positions within four years and three months of the prior election.

There are seven Regions, each with a Vice-President and two Regional Executive Officers. The last election was held on June 14, 2022.

The Cabinet also includes the Spokeswoman for the Infinity Women Secretariat Inc. (IWS), currently Anita Campbell. The IWS held an election for the Spokeswoman position in a separate process earlier in September 2025.

The qualifications for office include being a Citizen at least 18 years old, a resident or willing to be a resident in the Region for which one is seeking office, and having held elective office at a local level. There are more than 100 active Locals within the MMF governance structure. Twenty Citizens eligible to vote in their election must nominate a candidate.

The locations of all Election Day polls and the dates and locations of all advance polls are being released later today.
