Statement from Shawn Nault, the Minister of Red River Métis Veterans, on the 35th Anniversary of the end of the Gulf War
February 28, 2026
Today the Manitoba Métis Federation, National Government of the Red River Métis, recognizes the 35th anniversary of the end of the Gulf War. This event was an incredibly important milestone in Canada's military history and continues to resonate with our Citizens who served and witnessed the events of that era.
Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August of 1990, Canada joined a global coalition of over 35 countries that committed to restore peace and stability in the region.
Canada contributed more than 4,000 members of the Canadian Armed forces to "Operation Friction," where they served across land, sea, and airborne initiatives. Crucial to the success of this operation were the families of those deployed, providing support and strength from home.
One of the most influential aspects of this period was the evolution within the Canadian Army. The Gulf War marked the first time that Canadian women would serve in combat roles, forever changing the Canadian military from that point onward.
We want to thank these service women for the impact they had and continue to celebrate the efforts and achievements our Citizens have made to the global peace that we continue to benefit from at home.
As we reflect on the involvement of Canadian service men and women, it is critical we recognize the impact that this war had on our Veterans. The environment and operation conditions are now directly linked to respiratory issues, pain, and fatigue our Veterans have suffered since returning home. As a result, Canada now recognizes Gulf War Illness (GWI) as a condition experienced by Canadian Veterans who served, enabling them to receive disability benefit claims. We would encourage any of our Veterans who served in the Gulf War to visit the Veteran Affairs Canada Website to learn how they may be able to apply for benefits related to GWI.
Today is a day to reflect and remember those who served in this era, and their families, recognizing the impact this war had on them and the impact their service continues to have on us. The Red River Métis Veterans Department invites any of our Red River Métis Veterans who served in the Gulf War, or their families, to share their stories with us. If you or a family member served in the Gulf War, please contact our department, as we would value the opportunity to hear and record the stories of those who served in this period for our Red River Métis Veterans Archive. For more information on the archive, please email rrmvreception@mmf.mb.ca.
