Statement on the loss of former MMF Cabinet Member and friend, Joan Ledoux

Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, is saddened to announce the sudden passing of our friend and long-standing Cabinet Member, Joan Ledoux.

Joan dedicated more than 30 years of her life to serving the Red River Métis and retired from her Cabinet position in spring of 2026. Prior to that, she served as MMF Minister of Education and Associate Minister of Métis Employment and Training, where she passionately advocated for educational empowerment, lifelong learning, the implementation and preservation of the Michif language within our education system, and the creation of opportunities for Citizens across the Homeland.

In addition to her exceptional work for the Red River Métis Government, Joan served as a member of the University College of the North Council of Elders and was recognized with the Queen's Jubilee Award in 2023. Proud of her Red River Métis identity, Joan held a deep respect for our Nation's history, which guided her commitment to creating a brighter future for Red River Métis Citizens for generations to come. Joan will always be remembered for her big smile, sense of humour and care for Citizens, particularly in The Pas Region.

We will all miss the joy Joan brought into this world. At this time, our hearts and prayers are with the Ledoux family, and we stand with all those grieving her passing.
