Will Goodon named to inaugural CMHC Indigenous Advisory Council

Winnipeg, MB, in the Métis Nation Homeland - Will Goodon, Manitoba Metis Federation's (MMF) Minister of Housing and Property Management, is getting ready to have an even greater impact on housing for Métis Nation at the national level.

Minister Goodon was recently named to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) new 10-member Indigenous Advisory Council.

"I am looking forward to working with Indigenous leaders in housing on this new Council," said Will Goodon, "I will always represent the Métis Nation to the best of my ability. The confidence of my President, Cabinet and the Citizens of the Métis Nation means so much to me and I will honour that trust."

Based out of Brandon, Will Goodon has served in his role with the MMF for the past six years, as Minister of both the Housing and Property Management departments, the latter of which is responsible for properties owned by the MMF.

Minister Goodon also co-chairs the Indigenous Homes Innovation Initiative's National Steering Committee.

Minister Goodon has consulted Métis Nation Citizens across Manitoba and Canada regarding numerous housing initiatives and has served as an advocate for Métis and Indigenous rights at the provincial, federal, and international levels, including at United Nations conferences.

The inaugural Indigenous Advisory Council includes 10 First Nation, Inuit, and Métis representatives who bring diverse backgrounds and ensure regional representation; experience related to traditional knowledge, Indigenous housing, homelessness, and reconciliation; gender; age; and 2SLGBTQIA+ orientation. All members have been appointed for a two-year term, with potential to return for an additional three-year term.

"Housing remains an important priority for Métis Nation, and Minister Goodon has done tremendous work with MMF programs like the first-time home buyers' program and the home repair program. I'm confident he will lend an important perspective to CMHC's activities, ensuring that our Métis agenda is heard."

The Council will work to co-create CMHC's reconciliation vision and action plan that will be integrated into the organization's everyday operations, including its policies, program delivery, client relations, human resources, and procurement practices. The action plan is being created in service of CMHC's goal that by 2030, everyone living in Canada has an affordable home that meets their needs.
