MMF extends condolences for Canadian Armed Forces members

October 22, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that the Red River Métis Veterans Department, on behalf of the MMF, National Government of the Red River Métis, and all Citizens, extend our heartfelt condolences on the loss of members of the Canadian Armed Forces following an incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta on October 17, 2026.

While information is still being gathered, what is known is that a fire ignited within the training area of the base and spread rapidly in the area. The resulting fire tragically led to the deaths of serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, with many others critically injured. The Canadian Armed Forces has not yet released a full detailing of all those injured, however Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the names of the following soldiers who passed away.

Sgt. Morgan Wong

Pte. Shaun Farrell

Pte. Aidan Goulding

Pte. Hayden Lykkemark

These young men joined the Canadian Armed Forces to serve and protect us all; their loss will be felt for generations to come. As we mourn and reflect, let us remember not only these men but also their families, their comrades, and all those who have been impacted by their loss.

The MMF's Health and Wellness department offers their Mental Health Wellness Support line at 1-833-390-1041. We encourage any Citizens impacted by this loss to reach out to this support line and any channels they have during this difficult time. The weight of this loss is heavy, and as Red River Métis and even more as Canadians, it is the weight we must carry as we mourn together and commit that above all, we will remember them.

Lest we forget

Shawn Nault, Minister of Red River Métis Veterans
